The New Year: The Importance of Resolutions

Resolutions are effective goal-setting, life enriching exercises to provide individuals with focus, direction and purpose.

New Year's Day has come and gone but there are probably very few individuals who took the time and mental energy to sit down and compile a list of what they want to accomplish within the next 365 days. Even though statistics prove time and time again that written goals are essential to those who wish to become successful in life, it's a minimal percentage that actually do pick up that pen or pencil and put to paper their hopes and dreams for the upcoming year.

What do written resolutions do for an individual? Consider the following positive outcomes:

  • They increase focus. Just the act of committing goals to writing will make an individual's drive to complete that goal more real and intense. And reviewing these goals every day will increase that intensity, making the end result more positive. Think about how satisfied you feel when you cross off a lengthy daily to-do list and multiply that one hundred fold for a yearly goal. Keeping that yearly goal in front of you and reviewing several times per day will dramatically increase it's effectiveness.
  • They clarify what is is that you really wish to accomplish in your year and your life. You may have been very vague about what you want to accomplish but writing your true intentions out will clarify what you really want to do with your life in the next 365 days and beyond.
  • Resolutions will give you purpose. You may have been floundering in your business, personal and social life. Things may not be going well and you may have little or no self-esteem. Providing yourself with positive goals and the tools to implement the desires of your heart will make an individual feel like they are actually living and accomplishing instead of just existing from day-to-day.
  • They encourage you to dream big and think outside of the box. You may begin your year in trepidation but have the guts to go ahead and write some mighty goals tand creative resolutions to complete. In January, they may seem unattainable but with small steps every month, the goal may easily come to completion by the end of the year. By December, you may wonder what the big deal was - by breaking your goals into small pieces throughout the year, you may make them manageable and easy to accomplish.

No matter how big or small your goals are, they are your dreams and resolutions and it is up to you to make this year one of true accomplishment. Start out with a pen and paper and write out your year. If it is going to be, it is up to you.
